Are CBD and Hemp Oil the Same?

Going green has taken on a different meaning following the legalization of marijuana in countries such as Canada and the United States. In the wake of widespread legalization, hemp and CBD products have sprung from out of the woodwork, promising scores of benefits to users.

Some of the purported benefits of CBD products include better sleep, stress management, and reduced anxiety. But amidst all the terminology and supposed benefits, it’s easy to get lost in all the hype.

What exactly is CBD oil? Are all hemp-derived products the same? Although they may look alike, not all CBD products have the properties. Furthermore, not all of them are made from the same cannabis type.

To help you understand what these products are and what they are for, let’s break it down to the basics, starting with the raw materials.

From the same plant genus

First and foremost, it’s important to note that both hemp and marijuana are two varieties of the same plant genus,  Cannabis sativa. Because both plants belong to the same species, they’re often lumped together despite being of different varieties.

CBD and hemp oil come from the hemp plant, though their application couldn’t be more different. Their function, chemical effects, and constituents also differ in various ways.

To help differentiate these two oils further, let’s take a closer look at each type.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is just one of the many active compounds found in the cannabis plant. This compound is extracted from the stalks, flowers, and leaves of the mature plant. It is the component responsible for the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD oil.

CBD is also rich in antioxidants. It is commonly found in skincare products and high-vibe tinctures and is also made into vape juice, which can be inhaled as vapor. To ensure a safe and satisfactory CBD vaping experience, make sure you’re well equipped with the necessary  vaporizer accessories.

Taken as medication, CBD acts as an analgesic. It reduces pain and inflammation, making it essential for treating headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, and neuropathic conditions. It is also used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and bug bites.

What is hemp oil?

Hemp oil, on the other hand, is known as hemp seed oil. As the name implies, hemp seed oil is derived from seeds of the hemp plant. The unrefined version of the oil is dark green and has a nutty flavor. It contains protein, fiber, and a mix of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

After undergoing the refining process, hemp oil becomes colorless and transparent. It retains very little of its original flavor and does not contain as many vitamins and antioxidants. Hemp seed oil also does not have an active CBD component. Compared to CBD oil, it is safe to ingest and is a safe and nutritious diet supplement.

As a skincare product, hemp seed oil has similar anti-inflammatory properties as CBD oil. It is an effective moisturizer that softens the skin without clogging the pores. Studies show hemp seed oil has a zero comedogenic rating.

Similarities and differences between CBD oil and hemp oil

Simply put, CBD oil and hemp oil are entirely different varieties of oil. They have different applications and aren’t interchangeable. It would be best to avoid referring to both as “hemp oils” and apply distinction whenever necessary to avoid confusion.

CBD oil can be used to treat neurological diseases due to its ability to enhance brain function and help speed up the healing process. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is also an excellent pain reliever. CBD oil also has antidepressant and stress-relieving properties.

Hemp oil, on the other hand, is used as a dietary supplement. Some refer to this oil as a superfood with its variety of nutritional benefits. It can also be used as a drying oil due to its ability to polymerize.

Despite being derived from the plant Cannabis sativa, the CBD oil and hemp oil sold on shelves and online stores won’t get you high.  Neither of these products contains a significant amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to affect you mentally or physically.

It is also worth noting that both oils interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system, although they don’t necessarily have the same results. Both oils are popular skincare products as they don’t clog the pores and are excellent moisturizers. Because of their many uses, these cannabis-derived oils will be useful for years to come.
