What is an electronic dab rig and how does it actually work?
If you’ve been using a traditional torch-and-banger setup and someone mentions an electronic dab rig, the basic pitch is easy: same result, no torch. But the technology behind modern e-rigs is more interesting than that summary suggests, and understanding it helps you choose the right device and get better results from whichever one you use.
The basic principle
An electronic dab rig vaporizes concentrate using battery-powered heat rather than a butane flame. The fundamental goal is the same as a traditional setup — bring your concentrate to a precise temperature that vaporizes terpenes and cannabinoids without combusting them — but the mechanism is entirely different. Where a traditional rig relies on the user to heat a banger with a torch and time the cool-down, an e-rig handles the heating automatically.
Key components of an electronic dab rig
The heating element

The most important component. Three main approaches in 2026:
Ceramic side-wall heating: The most common technology. A ceramic chamber surrounds the concentrate and heats from all sides simultaneously. Forgiving and reliable. Quartz crucible (bottom-heat): A quartz bowl heats concentrate from below. Quartz is chemically inert at vaping temperatures — adds nothing to the vapor and preserves terpene profiles completely. Produces the cleanest flavor in the e-rig category. Used in: DaVinci EQ.
Induction heating: An electromagnetic field heats the chamber directly. Extremely fast heat-up (~4 seconds for the Dr. Dabber Switch 2), no atomizer to replace, IR sensor reads actual vapor temperature. Used in: Dr. Dabber Switch 2.
The battery
All portable e-rigs run on rechargeable lithium batteries. Most quality devices deliver 20–35 sessions per charge. Premium devices charge via USB-C.
The water chamber (bubbler)

The vapor path

Temperature control
Three approaches: preset levels (simple, fixed options), on-device precise control (degree-by-degree adjustment on touchscreen — DaVinci EQ), and app-based control (precise adjustment via Bluetooth smartphone app — Puffco, Switch 2).
The science of vaporization
Concentrates contain terpenes and cannabinoids that vaporize at different temperatures. Terpenes are volatile — the most delicate ones vaporize at relatively low temperatures and degrade at high heat. This is why low-temperature dabs taste more complex: you’re capturing terpenes before heat destroys them.

Why temperature precision matters
