About Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is an ancient method of using volatile oils from plants for medicinal purposes. Ancient Egyptians, Persians and Greeks used aromatherapy by burning incense or parts of plants such as leaves, bark and roots. Distilled and infused oils were poured into a pot or bowl of boiling water and the scents diffused through the air of the home or sickroom. By the 13th century, the distillation of oil for aromatherapy was common practice.
Vaporizing Do's and Dont's
Today, aromatherapy is commonly provided through the use of a vaporizer, a device that heats the plant material or essential oil to the point that volatile oils are released into the air, but not so hot that they begin to burn. A properly functioning vaporizer does not create smoke, so there is no risk to the lungs. For best effect, the plant matter should be properly ground and not left in the device too long. Don’t overload the vaporizer, set the temperature too high or reuse too many times – two or three sessions is usually the maximum. Start the vaporizer at the lowest temperature and move the setting high if necessary. Look online for accurate vaporizer reviews so you choose the right device the first time.
